The West Allis-West Milwaukee Learning Center is located 1135 South 70th Street in West Allis. This is an alternative
high school program that offers students that have met little success
in the traditional high school setting an opportunity to earn a
traditional high school diploma in a non-traditional setting. The school
has been developed to bolster our students' academic abilities and
affirm success-oriented concepts and philosophies. Learning Center students are members of a CREW; working together to experience a positive school culture that fosters mutual respect.
The WAWM Learning Center offers students an accelerated format for credit accumulation and
recovery. Through a combination of teacher-led classroom experiences,
work-experience for credit, lifetime fitness independent (verifiable)
physical education, and volunteer experience student-initiated projects
(SIP) students can capture credits and get back on track to graduate on
time.
Like all
students in the West Allis-West Milwaukee, et al. School District, the
students at the Learning Center must attend high school for a
total of four years and earn twenty-three and one-half credits to obtain
a high school diploma. If a student fails to meet his/her academic
responsibilities at and/or fails to have a ninety-five per cent
attendance rate while at our school, and/or demonstrates poor
citizenship while a student at our school, that student will be assigned
to our Independent Learning Center (ILC). This is an alternative
independent study program utilizing web-based credit recovery
programming and independent study contracts.
The
West Allis-West Milwaukee School District does believe that
adults should guide students along this journey with care, compassion,
and respect for their diverse learning styles, backgrounds, and needs.
Addressing individual differences profoundly increases the potential for
learning and creativity of each student. All people can and want to
learn. It is our belief that expeditionary learning harnesses the
natural passion to learn and is a powerful method for developing the
curiosity, skills, knowledge and courage needed to imagine a better
world and work toward realizing that goal.
